On March 10, 2025, X, the social media site formerly Twitter, had a big global outage that stopped millions of users from accessing the site. The disruption affected both the mobile app and the web version, leading to widespread frustration and confusion. Many users reported feeds not loading, login issues, and failure to post new content.

The outage quickly become a trending topic on other social media platforms, with users migrating to Meta's Threads, Bluesky, and Mastodon to share their frustrations. X (formerly known as Twitter) is experiencing ongoing outages, affecting users worldwide. The platform has faced multiple disruptions throughout the day, with users reporting difficulties accessing both the mobile app and the website.

What Happened?

Reports from Downdetector, a service that monitors website and app outages, showed that the X outage started around 3:00 PM IST (9:30 AM GMT). Within minutes, thousands of users from different parts of the world, including the United States, India, the UK, Australia, and Canada, reported issues accessing the platform.

Key Problems Reported by Users

  • Feed not loading – Many users were unable to refresh their timelines.

  • Login failures – Some users were logged out automatically and could not sign back in.

  • Posting issues – Users who were able to access the platform reported difficulties in sending tweets (or "posts").

  • Mobile and desktop affected – Both the mobile app and the web version experienced glitches, with some users getting error messages like "Something went wrong. Try again later.

Downdetector received over 40,000 complaints at the peak of the outage, confirming that the issue was widespread. In the United States, nearly 58% of users faced mobile app problems, while 31% struggled with the website. In India, the numbers were 80% for website issues, 11% login failures, and 9% mobile app glitches.

How Did Users React?

Whenever a major platform like X goes down, users immediately turn to other social media platforms to check if the problem is widespread or just on their end. This time was no different.

Users Turn to Other Platforms
With X inaccessible, many users flocked to Meta's Threads, Bluesky, and Mastodon to discuss the outage. Some even joked about Twitter's reliability since Elon Musk's takeover, pointing out that such outages have become more frequent.
Memes quickly flooded these alternative platforms, with many mocking X's unstable infrastructure. Some users humorously suggested that the platform was down because Musk had fired too many engineers—a reference to the workforce cuts that have taken place since Musk acquired Twitter.

Trending Hashtags
During the outage, hashtags such as #TwitterDown, #XDown, and #ElonFixThis started trending on competing platforms. Many users also tagged Musk directly, hoping for a response.

What Caused the Outage?

As of now, X has not issued an official statement explaining the reason behind the outage. However, technical experts suggest that the disruption could be due to one of the following reasons:
Server Issues – A failure in X's data centers could have caused the platform to go offline temporarily.
Software Update Glitch – If X was rolling out a significant update, an unforeseen bug might have led to system-wide failures.
Cyberattack – Though unlikely, there is always a possibility of a DDoS attack (Distributed Denial of Service), where hackers flood a system with traffic to overwhelm it.
Infrastructure Challenges – Since Musk's takeover, Twitter has undergone several cost-cutting measures, including downsizing its engineering team, which some speculate could be leading to frequent technical problems.

Should Users Be Concerned?

While occasional downtime is common for social media platforms, repeated outages can indicate more significant infrastructure problems. This is not the first time X has gone offline in recent months, and many users worry that its reliability has decreased.

What Can You Do If X Goes Down Again?

If you experience similar issues in the future, here's what you can do:
Check Downdetector – Visit Downdetector to see if others are reporting issues.
Try a Different Device – Sometimes changing from the mobile app to the desktop version—or vice versa—helps.
Follow Official Updates – X usually posts updates on its status page or through Elon Musk's personal account.
Use Alternative Platforms – If X is down, you can switch to Threads, Bluesky, or Mastodon for social interactions.

This recent X outage highlights the growing concerns about the platform's stability. Whether due to technical failures, maintenance issues, or internal cost-cutting measures, such disruptions can frustrate users and push them toward alternative social media platforms
